We were pleased that more than 200 people attended this performance. We raised over $1500 which is being sent to AFER. Following the performance, there was a lively panel discussion led by Rev. Kathleen Owens (Associate Minister, First UU Church), Eric Isaacson (Attorney at Law), and Kristen Kuriga (Social Justice Team Leader, First UU Church).

"8" is a reader's theatre presentation of the trial of Perry v. Schwarzenegger (now Brown) filed by AFER (American Foundation of Equal Rights) in 2008 to overturn Proposition 8, which eliminated gay and lesbian couples' right to marry in California. "8" embodies the actual words of the Federal Court's trial transcripts, first-hand observations of the courtroom, and interviews with the plaintiffs and their families.

Author Dustin Lance Black is an American screenwriter, director, film and television producer, and LGBT rights activist. He won two Writers Guild of America awards for his work on the television series "Big Love" and an Academy Award for the 2008 film "Milk." Black is a founding board member of AFER.

Co-sponsored by Rainbow Action which supports LGBT events and initiatives at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of San Diego.
